Half Dome 2

February 27, 2012

Here is Half Dome 2, another 5″ x 7″ linoleum-cut block print.  This one is pretty self-explanatory.  I think I’m getting more comfortable the block-cutting tools again, so I tried out a bit more texture and detail with this one.  If anyone has any suggestions for me, feel free to comment or Facebook-message me!

The next big project I am working on, as it turns out, is actually a private commissioned piece that will not be featured on my art blog.  That being the case, and considering the great amount of time that tends to elapse from finished drawing to finished drawing, I realize I need to find some way to start generating more artwork.  I have decided to take up some quick 5″ x 7″ linoleum-cut print projects in my time off.  The following piece was really really fun to do.  I largely began work on it yesterday, finished it up today, and I think the results are satisfactory.  After I finish the first set of prints, I am considering altering the linoleum to do a second set with more detail in the tree and bushes in the foreground.  The dramatic silhouette concept is nice, and has its place, but I fear it may look a little too stamp-like, and so I’d like to try a set of both styles.  Depending on how successful it is, I’ll consider another blog post about it.  The only major criticism I have about this piece is the fact that I forgot to reverse my sketch before putting it on the linoleum for carving, so this piece is in fact a reverse-image of Half Dome.  I hope it’s not too big of a concern.  For a look at some of my older linoleum cut prints, see my August 4, 2009 and April 8, 2010 blog entries (see the links at the bottom of the blog).

Putah Creek Bouldering 2

February 10, 2012

Here is the second drawing of the third set in my “Climbing Series”.  See the December 9, 2011 post for a comparison of the two drawings.  Following in the same theme as previous sets, this one is much smaller than the first, about 5.75″ x 4″ in graphite on paper.  I think I put a fair amount of detail in there, and I considered putting more in, but ultimately I decided to keep it as it is.  As usual I welcome any critique anyone wants to offer here or on Facebook.

Once again, if anyone happens to be in the Palo Alto, CA area this month (or is willing to make the drive) please stop by the Pacific Art League to check out my Bonsai print in the current main gallery exhibition “Works on Paper”!
